Our free pop-Up Programme continues and grows in 2019 bringing music to our fine local businesses that keep Todmorden lively and well-fed all year round!

Cafe Spice

Café Spice are a trio who create heavenly and Autumnal harmonies reminiscent of Mamas & Papas whilst also sitting with the effortlessly sublime indie-folk of contemporaries such as The Staves or HAIM. It would seem three is a winning number.
Consisting of Georgia Gage, Eleanor Lang and Niamh Feeney, Café Spice have spent time playing live around Manchester where they reside, further training their already impressive vocal prowess. Over Summer 2018 they made a trip to British Grove Studios, London to turn several live favourites into future singles. The first, Café Spice’s debut, ‘Lauren,’ received coverage from every major online UK folk publication and was supported by Tom Robinson (BBC6Music) as part of the BBC Introducing Mixtape. 2019 looks to be an exciting year with  more singles to be released and live appearances across the UK Summer circuit.

Todmorden Folk Festival Singers Club

Our club comes from a love of singing and from the idea that anyone can get together and sing for the enjoyment of it and find solidarity in song!

We’ll be revealing what we’ve been working on at the Friday evening concert then we be running Singalonga Sound of Protest on Sunday afternoon. This session is born from the idea that there is nothing more solidarity-making than a good singalong/ much needed communal tuneful rant. Join us in a racuous and fun session of protest singing. Some old, some newer, some surprises! No previous singing experience necessary. Bring yourself, bring your enthusiasm. Come raise the rafters with us!

Rum Doodle

Rum Doodle are a folk roots acoustic duo from Leeds. Martin & BB Tim play mostly their own original songs with influences as broad as Christy Moore & The Dubliners to Bob Dylan & Neil Young. A lot of the material draws it’s inspiration from these Islands we live in, be it about our wonderful heritage and different languages to growing up besides the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. But most important is the CRAIC.

LP Living Room

Do you have records and no record player? Is there a record you own that you really want to share? Come along to Magic City on Halifax Rd and we’ll be spending Saturday afternoon sharing, playing, listening to proper vinyl! Bring your own or just bring your ears and have a listen.

Four Hoarsemen

Formed in 2015, The 4 Hoarse Men all hail from the upper Calder valley: Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall and sing with several other local groups including Calder Valley Voices, Hepton Singers, Three Valleys Gospel Choir and Menfolk Waits. They sing an eclectic mix of folk, barbershop, self penned and Georgian in accapella harmony. They perform regularly around West Yorkshire including gigs in Huddersfield, Leeds and their own showcase as part of Hebden Bridge Folk Roots festival in 2017. They’re well chuffed to be invited to sing again at a home town festival.

Ruth E. Cockburn

Award winning musician and comedian Ruth E. Cockburn has been singing songs and telling stories all over the shop for some time. Last year her show ‘Love Letters from Blackpool’ was nominated for Best New Show at both Leicester Comedy Awards and GM Fringe and has since been on tour all over the country. She has performed all over Europe and plans a world tour next year. She is from Blackpool, but no body is perfect.

West Riding Concertina Ensemble

Throughout the later part of the Nineteenth and the first half of the Twentieth Centuries concertina bands were popular across the North of England.
These bands were the same size as Brass Bands, about 24 players, and played a similar repertoire – marches, airs and popular tunes of the time. The West Riding Concertina Ensemble were formed to play the type of music that these bands would be playing today and our range includes music from Elizabethan times to the present day, played on Treble, Baritone and Bass concertinas.
Three of our players also play with the much larger Hawkwood Concertina Band, which was instrumental in the revival of this music. To here some of their tunes click here

Phil Reed

“Be whisked away by Phil Reed as he plays haunting traditional Irish melodies over live percussive and harmonious loops.” Phil has been playing tin whistle and bodhrán for twenty years, often incorporating both instruments into the same performance. He builds layers of sound using a loop pedal, starting with rhythmic percussion, adding polyphonic harmonies on low whistles, then finally a set of melodies on tin whistle at the top. Expect to hear some familiar traditional tunes and maybe one you were not expecting. Phil has lived in Todmorden since 2014 and has been looking forward to returning to Tod Folk Fest since his debut performance in 2015.

Magpahi

Magpahi is the solo project of Alison Cooper (Todmorden) who’s work has ebbed and flowed in the fringes of folk for a decade playing whimsical acoustics and sepia stories inspired by absent narratives of the past. Rebecca Lee and Marie Thompson Rebecca Lee (Bredbeddle, If the Bell Rings we will Hear it) and Marie Thompson are sound makers based in Nottingham. Combining oboe and flute, they are interested in the constraints and opportunities offered by woodwind instruments in noisy musical spaces.
